Description:

Aspartateaminotransferase(AST),alsoknownasGlutamate-oxaloacetatetransaminase(GOT)isatransaminase(EC2.6.1.1)similartothemoreliverspecificalaninetransaminase(ALT).Althoughcommonlyincludedclinicallyaspartofadiagnosticliverfunctiontest,ASThasabroaderclinicalutilitysinceitmayalsobeelevatedindiseasesaffectingotherorgans,suchastheheartormusclesinmyocardialinfarction,alsoinacutepancreatitis,acutehemolyticanemia,severeburns,acuterenaldisease,musculoskeletaldiseasesandtrauma.Itcatalyzesthereaction:

Aspartate+⍺-Ketoglutarate⇌Oxaloacetate+Glutamate.
